In the 1950s and early '60s there was a TV panel game called "What's My Line" on which celebrity panelists tried to guess the unusual occupations of members of the public. Jack Law would have made a wonderful contribution to that programme: as one of his jobs was "Pinnacle repairman" - and you don't get many of those ! The Farnhill Pinnacle, the well known local landmark, was built to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. It was constructed by Barritt's, the Kildwick stonemasonry company, with much of the work being carried out by William Dawson. In the years following, Barritt's carried out a number of repairs. John Martin Law (known as Jack), was William Dawson's grandson. He started to work for Barritt's when he left school and, apart from service during WWII, worked for the company all his life - eventually coming to own the company. The photograph and report shown below relate to the repairs to the Pinnacle that Jack Law and his company carried out in 1970. Jack Law was well known in the village. He was a Kildwick School governor for over 30 years, vicar's Warden for over 40 years to the Rev. Selby, and one of St. Andrew's bell-ringers.
